Media Legal Defense Center under the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) calls on the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to show concern into the Tabula TV journalist Giorgi Sikharulidze’s case of August 24. According to the piece of news published on the Tabula website Giorgi Sikharulidze was dropped from a car by around five police officers, after some verbal abuse the footage on his mobile phone was deleted. The incident took place in the evening of August 24, during the police raid in Tbilisi.

In the August 27 statement GYLA’s Media Legal Defense Center points out that neither the Georgian Law on Police nor any other legislative norm grants a policeman a right to restrict video recording of external search or any other police activity including raid. “The police activities that are not directly enshrined in a relevant normative act are restricted by the Constitution of Georgia. The restriction of stopping, external search and video recording is the action of this type. Deletion of video footage is illicit too,” reads the statement.

Media Legal Defense Center emphasizes when the reports on the probable offense committed by a policeman are in place the investigation shall be carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, and to the latter Media Legal Defense Center made a request to show concern into the incident. The organization calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs instead of making futile statements to thoroughly respond whether police actions were taken against Tabula TV journalist Giorgi Sikharulidze. And in case of  a positive response to clarify what measures had been applied in relation to Giorgi Sikharulidze in line with the Georgian Law on Police.
