Bloggers and Activists Arrested at Protest Rally in Baku

January 26, Baku - The participants of the peaceful protests, including prominent blogger Emin Milli investigative journalist, were detained. In the course of the rally they were publishing on Twitter some protest-related videos and photos. They managed to upload the material featuring the dispersal of protestors by Azerbaijani law enforcers. The detained later Emin Milli tweeted: “I am arrested: sitting in a bus with some wonderful people.”

According to the Azerbaijani Tweeter users over 30 people have been detained. One of them, in particular Ruslan Asadi reported that a young activist, co-organizer of the rally Ilkin Rustemzade has been arrested too. Human rights lawyer Intigam Alieyev is one of the detainees. Referring to the Tweeter users the law enforcement was arresting the activists having moved to the coastal region.

The wave of protests in Azerbaijani started on January 23-24 in the town of Ismayilli. The citizens participating in the rallies were calling for the resignation of local government. The law enforcement used tear gas to disperse protestors in Ismayilli. The protests further moved to the capital city Baku.

On January 26 the Azerbaijani users Tweeted that the law enforcement blocked every way leading to the square the protest rally was planned to be held at.
