The Regional Journalist Security Network Program seeks to enable journalists working in difficult environments to continue to do so as safely and securely as possible. This objective will be accomplished through the establishment of three regional security training hubs for journalists – El Salvador for Latin America, Kenya for Africa, and Georgia for Eurasia.
Position Summary
The Digital Security Trainer, under the supervision of the Hub Manager, will be contracted part-time for an 11-month period to prepare and deliver digital security trainings and workshops to journalists in based in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. This position is open to Georgian nationals.
Duties & Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- In coordination with the Hub Manager and Master Trainers prepare regionally appropriate trainings and workshop curriculum for journalists based in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
- Ensure holistic approach and coordination with the Physical Security Trainer.
- Deliver trainings promoting digital safety to journalists including: threat awareness and instructing in mitigation and circumvention strategies; protecting information and sources; understanding location tracking, digital traces and other surveillance risks; satellite phone, mobile phones and SMS; VPN, Tor browser bundle and anonymity; securing chat protocols through OTR; safer Twitter, Facebook and other social media platform behavior; email encryption, passwords, secure deletion tools and emergency data destruction; hacking and malware; legality of tactics.
- Conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of trainings and materials to address any deficiencies and identify trainings to be added in order to monitor training quality and implementation;
- Mentor additional trainers in digital security strategies for journalists.
- Monitor 24/7 emergency assistance hotline to journalists.
Qualifications
- Substantial experience working with online journalism, computer security or related field
- Familiarity with media landscape in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus
- Excellent communications skills; explaining and converting complex technical scenarios into layman’s terms
- Experience in the design and implementation in technical education, with trainings and/or workshops preferred
- High levels of computer literacy and understanding of HCI and usability
